WOOD's first show back from a New York summer tour, proved to be an anticipated return home at Paladinos by hardcore WOOD fans. Long hair, tight pants and lots of leather accompanied them, along with really short skirts and three opening bands. All in all, WOOD was the most entertaining performers as well as the best musicians in the house.
The most intriguing character of the band was guitar player Mike Moore, whom alone put on an awesome show. His crazy riffs and guitar squeals, along with his three-foot long hair tossing were reminiscent of Zakk Wylde meets the late Dimebag Darrell. Hawk's vocals were energetic putting on a really good show. His intense stares and heavy biker style really got the crowd going. One of his stronger vocals was Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boot's." Drummer Bobby Richard's explosive beats on the skins drove the band well keeping the energy high and the crowd well pleased. Bass player Franko accompanied Bobby Richard's drumming to a tee with Mike Moore's rhythm guitar fitting the two perfectly. This band was definitely in sync and looked like they've been doing their thing together for along time.
Though I was only a wee little one in the eighties/early nineties, I know enough to understand that Wood's whole demeanor was a definite throwback. It was a hell of a lot fun though. There is nothing like some good old tight pants and longhaired head banging music to get the energy flowing. For a metal band they are not typical and definitely worth checking out. With Wood it's the whole package. It's not just their music but also their theatrical performance on stage and the crowds they attract. I can see them now, touring with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY; it is right up their alley.
The sound at Paladino's was definitely good but it was ear piercing loud, leaving me deaf for a couple days. The beer was reasonable and the popcorn yummy. This was definitely a show to be remembered. For more info on the band check out their website at www.thebandwood.com or contact the bands hotline at (818) 887-2079.
