Material: These players prove that mucho testosterone can still wear long hair. Their brand of heavy squealing, grinding old school thrash metal borrows the boots from bands like Metallica,Pantera, Tool and Black Sabbath and puts its crunchy, dirty soul right in your face.
Musicianship: Wood uphold metal’s true-believer standard: complicated or not, you’d better be able to play it live. Hawk’s vocals possess range and grace with elements of James Hetfield and Bruce Dickinson. His rhythm playing is excellent. McCullough and Richards complete the rhythm while Breene’s nimble fingers punish his frets and strings, making his axe wail with masochistic pleasure.
Performance: As dangerous, retro –looking middle aged metal fans hung in the corners, Paladino’s looked like a throwback to the eighties. During the first song McCullough popped a string, but the band carried on professionally, and by song two it was as if the mishap had never occurred.
Wood’s tunes provoked a startling loss of control in the audience. Bodies flew and slid across the floor until one dedicated fan actually broke his ankle. He laid on the floor with his foot pointing unnaturally away from his body, flanked by security- defiantly throwing the devil’s horns at them when ever they tried to assist him. Finally the fire department arrived and carried him away, as he continued flashing the devil’s horns with both hands. To say that Wood fans were hardcore would be a gross understatement.
Summary: Wood could easily hold their own next to the great metal bands they pay homage to, and should be on tour with them. The group is more than just a pert of the scene: they make it their own, and are well worth catching live. Stand back, though!!!
